MEDICATION MANAGEMENT & PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY

Even if you've come to the decision to give medications a try (or to consider making a change to your current regimen), what is the right approach?
The options and opinions can often feel overwhelming.
If you've landed on this page, you're probably considering whether taking a medication is right for you. Or perhaps you take medications already - but they don't seem to help as much as you'd like. Even if you've come to the decision to give medications a try (or to consider making a change to your current regimen), what is the right approach?
The options and opinions can often feel overwhelming. But they don't have to be.

Working with someone who is thoughtful, knowledgeable, and responsive can make the process more efficient so you're not wasting time searching for relief. Dr. Martins will work with you from day one to make sure your concerns are addressed before you make any decisions in your treatment.

We will work together to tease apart the areas in your life that are holding you back and assess whether psychiatric medications can help restore or improve your functioning and reduce your symptoms. Prior to your session, Dr. Martins will ask you to complete rating scales for anxiety, mood, and (if applicable) for trauma and inattention/hyperactivity symptoms. Your treatment will start with a comprehensive initial assessment done over a 60-minute session and may require a follow-up evaluation session of 45-minutes. Read more about the initial visit.

Treatment recommendations may include a discussion about different classes of medications you might consider, including evidence-based psychiatric medications and, when indicated, off-label use of medications. You may also benefit from supplemental psychotherapy (such as CBT, DBT, EMDR/trauma treatment, couples/family therapy, or psychodynamic psychotherapy). We will also discuss this in our treatment planning so you have the treatment options available to you.

Dr. Martins is well-trained and experienced in providing a thoughtful and step-wise approach to tackle the spheres of suffering that prevent you from functioning at your best.

MONITORING YOUR PROGRESS
If you choose to have Dr. Martins prescribe you psychiatric medications, she will work collaboratively with you to learn about any benefits and side effects of your medication. Together you will develop a follow-up plan. This includes the recommended frequency of visits to monitor your progress. If you see a therapist, Dr. Martins will collaborate with your clinician for a team-based, comprehensive approach to your treatment.
